If you've seen a lot of my work, you'll notice that it is quite rare that I include humans or even signs of human life. This picture just wouldn't be the same without the human element.
When I wake up (ridiculously early) for sunrises, I'm amazed at how few people witness them. Probably because it's ridiculously early. I'll be sitting on a beach and I'll go 2-3 hours before I see someone. Perhaps because of this, I feel it as more of a mission to capture these moments other people miss.
On this particular morning, I really liked the angle of the pool as it related to the ocean, with layers of water, reflection, and palm trees to give the image some vertical interest. I composed the shot and just sort of sat there....waiting...waiting.
Why won't this guy move? Come on man, do you see me over here trying to take a picture?
He just sat there, and I realized he was taking the moment in, just as I was trying to capture it. Suddenly it all made sense. The picture is about him, witnessing in real life what I am trying to capture for others that slept in that morning. He and I, together, were watching the world's best cinema, nature at its finest.
