Every so often, a specific scene enthralls me, and my desire to capture its essence takes over.

What ends up happening is I have multiple shots and interpretations of the same exact scene.  In other words, I will keep taking slight iterations of the same exact scene at different times of day, day after day.  I have this luxury if I’m close by (like at a hotel or resort) and I habitually and obsessively take hundreds, and sometimes thousands of pictures of it.

I treat it like a crime scene.

Every angle is explored.  Most details are revealed, and those that intrigue me are exploited.

That’s really the name of the game when it comes to photography.

This time, I was in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico when I made it my mission to capture this pier.

The multi-colored horizontal wood planks stacked themselves out to the beautiful ocean water until they reached an inviting covered hut.

The very first morning cemented my desire and commitment to visit this scene multiple times every day.  The morning was particularly alluring since the sun would arrive just in the right spot.  Since clouds can vary so much every morning, I knew there’d be plenty of variety.

I was not disappointed.  Here are some of my favorites depicting one of the most compelling scenes I’ve ever encountered.

A lady sat with her unknown friend contemplating life.
An early morning conversation and what appears to be an eavesdropper?
This image was in my dreams.

I'd just sit and wait until something happened. If you wait long enough, something always does.
This moment is burned in my brain. Amazing light.
